Yes, I know its late, but this is my first blogpost of 2012 & if I didn't say it, I wouldn't be a Scotsman. This will be a good year. I've decided. So there.
However, I don't think this is quite the winter that we were expecting. Given the weather in the past couple of years, I think we were all expecting snow, ice etc and it just hasn't materialised. I must admit to being disappointed. I like the cold. Its thrown nature out of sync too. The other day, I went to Leighton Moss RSPB and was amazed to see snowdrops already in bloom. Also, driving down a country road in the dark the other night, a couple of mice shot across in front of the car. And this morning I could see bugs dancing over the garden. All well and good, but the thing is it should be cold. And if we get a sudden cold snap, these prey species could be killed off causing serious problems for predator species later in the year.
But thats enough doom & gloom for one day. Lets try & get the years blogging off to a good start.
I actually went to Leighton Moss to try and get some decent shots of the bitterns that winter there. Last year the lakes froze completely and the warden was putting supplementary food out for them. so they were really easy to see, in fact one birder suggested getting one of them a top hat and cane! This year however, they're a lot more elusive and other than a movement in the reeds which COULD have been a bittern (or a water rail, a pride of lions or even the marching band of the Coldstream Guards...) well, lets just say I missed the opportunity. So I took a look at last years attempts again. And thats when it struck me. The problem with a lot of shots taken on bird reserves is the distance to the subject. Even with the best optics in the world, if its too far away, its too far away. So a long time ago I learned to compose AROUND the subject, with a view to cropping in slightly to make a saleable print. Needless to say this doesn't always go according to plan. However, over the past couple of years, some of my bird images have ended up as panoramics. When I stop and think about it, this was what struck me about the scenes originally, albeit subconsciously. However, because of difficulties in printing & framing, the rarely see the light of day. Until now. I'd love to hear what people think of them.

Panoramic Bird images - Images by Ken & Kitty Clark

Limited Edition Prints

With Christmas on its way, I've decided to release a series of limited edition prints. Apparently they've been putting in regular appearances at the grit trays recently, but needless to say as soon as I appear with a camera, they vanish. Maybe one day......

Early one Tuesday morning however, my friend Isabel Benchetrit and myself had been waiting since before dawn and getting wetter by the minute. In the end, we decided to make a run for the Grisedale hide and try to dry out for a bit. However, while we were there, one of the resident red stags took a walk through the marsh. They turned out to be the best shots we got all day & as you can see, the rain didn't let up for a minute!

The nut thief

Before I moved to England, I'd never seen a Nuthatch. In fact if you ask any Scots Birder, they'll probably tell you that its quite a rare bird really. I don't think my Dad has ever seen one.
Come south of the border however & its a whole new ball game. They're as common as muck. So much so, that everyone ignores them, or just doesn't see them.So I've decided to try my luck with an ongoing project revolving around a long established pair at a local country park. This pair actually have the car park within their territory, so are well habituated to humans, & hopefully will get quite used to the 'big eye' looking at them as time goes on. I've no idea what to expect from this, but the first results are quite promising so only time will tell!

Nuthatches - Images by Ken & Kitty Clark

Temporary suspension of sanity........

Strange title for a blog entry I know, but if you knew me you'd probably agree! I started the summer with great intentions of getting out there & finally getting the roe deer shots I'd always dreamed of. It never happened. Not only have I seen remarkably few roe deer this summer ( in fact only two and they were at the side of the motorway,) I've taken remarkably few photographs either. this is mainly due to events entirely within my control (i.e I was too @£$%$%$ lazy to get out there & do it) and the fact that I've been busy trying to make a living. Obviously for someone who is supposed to be a pro wildlife photographer this really isn't good enough so rest assured I will be taking steps to remedy this.
In the meantime, I've been working at loads of craft fairs, and the culmination of the summer period was for us to have a 3 page article about the business published in Lancashire Life. Its in the September issue and is currently on their website, so please take a look!

A Quick snapshot of our stall at a local fair

The Art of Invisibility

I have a confession to make. I've been having a love affair. With a deer.
For as long as I can remember, Roe Deer have fascinated me. I couldn't tell you why. After all they're not big & impressive like their red cousins, they don't bellow their heads off every autumn, and they don't travel in huge herds. In fact, they don't actually do much that makes them stand out at all. But what they do amazingly well, is disappear.
Roe are THE masters of the now you see it now you don't trick. They stand there, look straight at you and then just vanish. It actually seems to be downright uncanny. In the shot at the top of this blog, The little buck watched me for a couple of minutes, then turned into the hedge & disappeared. I've no idea where he went.
As July starts, so does the rutting season, so I'll be out there trying my hardest to get THAT shot. you know which one I mean, the magical one that stops everyone in their tracks. Maybe this year is my lucky year! In the next few posts, I'll keep you updated as to my progress and also give a few facts hint & tips about this species. In the meantime, if anyone out there knows of any good tips on shooting roe, I'll be glad to hear them!

Craft fairs & more craft fairs!

Its been a busy summer so far! those who follow my facebook fan page will know that I've started attending craft fairs in the north of England, with great success. The initial plan was to do two per month, and see how it went. However, they've proved so successful that they're eating into the time I spend doing everything else. The problem lies with the fact that I print everything I sell. and that takes a lot of time. I could farm it out, of course, but then I'd lose control over the finished product. This may seem a little control freakish but to me the quality of my products is everything. So, I guess for the next few months I'll just have to get up earlier & make the best of the light!

!!!!!STOPPRESS!!!!

I just found out that the fully grown mantis in the last gallery belongs to the species Apteromantis aptera

and is classified as at risk in the cites red list. My photography is based on being able to get under the animal's skin, to make a connection and to hopefully give the viewer a peek into what makes that particular animal tick. This is tricky at the best of times, but I find it nigh on impossible with something thats only a few millimetres long!
Some people however, can manage it. John Shaw for example produces spellbinding macro work, as does my friend Geoff Simpson. My wife also creates seriously good images of tiny things - for example the snail shot that ended up being published in last years British Wildlife Photography Awards book.
I however never quite got there. Granted, I've taken a few nice spider shots over the years, but I just couldn't get the shot to 'click' as it were. Until recently. A good friend gave me a praying mantis as a birthday present. I've always been intrigued by them but as we don't get wild mantids in the UK, I've only ever seen one in the wild (in the desert in Dubai a few years ago) so I'd never tried to shoot them before. Recently while on holiday in Spain, I found a nest that hatched right in front of my eyes. I shot nearly a thousand frames of them. I also found a wild subadult that wasn't scared of me in the slightest. In fact, it started to pose!
I guess I just had to find the right insect.......

Praying Mantis So she took me to see for myself. She was right.

They're still wary and the don't like the big eye looking at them, but they'll come right over your head just to get a closer look. They still move like guided missiles, but there are loads of them. This last visit, I gave up counting at 67, there may well have been more. Granted its an artificially induced population, (the originals were reintroduced to the UK a few years ago and the local villagers regularly put food out) but its great to see such a spectacle in the wild.

Unseen India

I met Sandesh Kadur very briefly at last years Wild Photo seminars. The species in question in this particular instance are corvids (crows) and the controversy is the proposed cull of a variety of subspecies in the UK to try and increase songbird numbers. Personally I don't think that killing one species to protect another is any kind of answer, but I'm not here to debate that issue.

The bird in the photo above is a British corvid not often seen outside the Highlands. It's called a Hooded Crow (Hoodies to the locals ) and they've fascinated me since I was a child. They are highly intelligent, will attack small mammals, including newborn lambs ( I know this is a controversial statement but I've watched them do it myself!) and are in short, survivors. There are now more around than I've ever seen before, and as any crofter will tell you, are considered to be trouble by the locals. However, I don't think that killing them would be the answer. The reason for the increase in numbers is that any natural predators have been removed from the locality. So, by process of elimination, if you remove the next problem species, how long before something else takes it's place? Remember the hedgehog problem a few years ago? Britain is after all is said and done a small island. There have been any number of attempts in recent years to reintroduce species that were originally disposed f because they were a problem. Perhaps if we stop interfering with nature and let it sort itself out, we won't frantically be trying to reintroduce corvids to our island in a hundred or so years.

Old Friends

Anyone who knows me knows I like tigers. I've got more tiger shots than I know what to do with and I'm currently planning another trip to Ranthambhore. So when I got in last night and discovered that BBC2 was showing a natural world show on tigers that was my evenings entertainment sorted. Then I found out which film it was. I first heard about it from the park guides who were thrilled to have a film made about their park. I'd never been able to find it, and now here it was. Shot by Colin Stafford-Johnson, Its a truly spectacular story about an amazing part of the world. If you missed it, follow the link below to see it on BBC iplayer. Personally I can't wait to go back.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/i/ysjds/

We're Back!!!!!!!!

Its finally happened! The broadband has been connected and we're back on the air! So now its down back to business as usual.
Aside from my communication problems, the move to the new office has been relatively smooth, with nothing getting broken and nothing important going missing. Everything now has its own little place and things are slowly starting to return to normal. I've even managed to edit some shots!
One thing I decided before I moved, was that I wanted to get back to what I enjoy about photography this year. When you do something for a living, it can take all the fun out of it. You get so preoccupied with making money that you can forget why you started liking something originally. This is especially true in the arts world. and I was as guilty of it as the next person. I'd got to the point of taking the 'safe' shot. Not pushing myself. And my creativity suffered as a result. No more.
I started printing black & white while I was at college. Its a slowly dying art these days, with a few brave souls keeping it moving forward. However, with todays technology, it's perfectly possible to produce good quality prints digitally, still using high quality paper, and these can rightfully be considered works of art.
So here are a few I prepared earlier. They were all taken in Austria over Christmas this year, and will be sold as limited edition prints made on Hahnemuhle paper and as greetings cards on the same stock. Please contact me at ken@wolfsheadphotographic.co.uk with any queries concerning these.
In the meantime I'd love to hear your thoughts on this kind of work, so if you like what you see, feel free to comment!

Black & White Winter scenes - Images by Ken & Kitty Clark

BT does it again!

A big apology to all and any regular readers of this page! As you may or may not know, I recently moved to an office in FY Creatives in Blackpool, with a view to streamlining my business and making myself more productive. Apart from the usual moving chaos (which seemed to involve a piano for some reason.....) everything went really well, and everything was set up and running in less than a week. Apart from landline phone and broadband. In the UK its not possible to currently get a broadband line to an office unless you have an active British Telecom line into the office as well. Ok, so as I didn't have this that was the first thing to arrange. Their website is thoroughly confusing, especially when looked at via an iphone. So I phoned them. BIG mistake. In fact HUGE! The person I spoke to couldn't have cared less. She gave me all the information I already had and then increased all the prices. When I asked why, I was told thats what it cost. Her supervisor couldn't have cared either. Apparently it was all my own fault for not doing it online. So, in the end, thats exactly what I did. I ordered my line connection, and shortly received a text message telling me that it would take over 2 weeks for an engineer to call and switch the line on. when I enquired why (their charter states generally within 48 hrs) I was told it was because of the snow. Which had melted 3 weeks previously. as this was one of those situations were theres nothing else you can do, I just had to bite my tongue and wait. To cap it all until the line is connected and can be checked, you can't even order the broadband connection. So I waited. Luckily, the engineer turned up on time. Great! Then he saw the connection point and the comms junction box down stairs. Not so great.Apparently he'd never seen one like this before. He might not be able to do the job that day. He might have to speak to the IT dept of the council to find out how they make their connections. It was pointed out that every other phone in the building was connected to BT's network via this system which had been set up with advice from BT. "Oh." says he, "I'll have another look."An hour and a half later, I had a connected phone. I had originally just been going to take out a total phone/broadband package with them, but after all this, not on your life! It took another 4 days for the system to be updated so that Orange could check the line, and apparently the broadband will be connected within a week, providing BT uphold their end of the bargain. I'm not holding my breath.
So this is why I have to apologise for the lack of blog posts. I could have written them from home as I'm doing now, but I really wanted the first one of the year to be from the new office. Sorry folks, that just wasn't possible.
But the next one........

Couldn't catch a cold...!

One of the things I hate about living near the English coast is that the winters are generally just damp. Very little ice, virtually no snow (last year being the exception that proves the rule,) and the temperature only just dips below freezing. To cap it all, everyone complains bitterly about how cold it is, and yet they refuse to dress sensibly for the weather! Honestly, I ask you!
I should really own up now. I'm not English. I'm a Scotsman. Were I grew up, the temperature regularly hit minus double figures, and I can remember scraping ice off the INSIDE of the window when I was a kid. We got snow every year, always enough for sledging, if not skiing. I loved it then, and I still love it now.
As a result of this, one of the highlights of my year is to take my family's Christmas presents up to Scotland. This year I had trouble parking at my sister's house as there was 4 feet of snow piled on the pavements (she's had to stop her 3yr old son from going into the back garden - he disappears!) and I couldn't even make it as far as my father's house in the north as there was a distinct possibility I wouldn't get back! I'll try again in January.......
Every now and again, however, Lancashire manages to hold its own. the other week, prolonged rain followed by a really cold night meant that every thing was covered with a heavy frost. I took a few shots, as a reminder more than anything but they actually worked out better than I'd hoped. For those of you reading this anywhere abroad, this is Lancashire in winter.

http://wolfshead.photoshelter.com/gallery/Frost/G0000dak.vp.4S7g

A Night To Remember !

the 'Burning Bright' open evening and private viewing has been and gone! It was a wonderful night, with a good turnout and quite a few sales! Many thanks to all who turned up, to the Blackpool Gazette for providing press coverage, and especially to the staff at FY Creative for a fantastic venue. The exhibition still has a week to run, so drop by if you have the chance, remember that a percentage of all sales goes to help save tigers in the wild. All images are printed on environmentally sound paper, making each one a great eco investment.
I often get asked if an event like this, which is so difficult to arrange, advertise, etc is actually worth it. A great list of speakers, inspirational images, and good food too! Wildlife photography is a lonely profession at the best of times, so seeing an entire auditorium full of colleagues and peers is like a dream come true. The 1st day was only slightly marred by one delegate using the question time as his own personal platform to make statements about the environment, but Chris Packham did an outstanding job keeping everything on an even keel. For me, the highlight of the whole event was main speaker David Doubilet. I've long been a fan of his work, and listening to him talk about his years in the business was enthralling. Can't wait for next year!

David Doubilet

Back by Popular Demand!

A couple of days ago, I was just getting ready to head up to Cumbria, when I had an emergency phone call from FY Creative, the gallery space I used for my last exhibition. It seemed that this months exhibitor had let them down, leaving the gallery space (also used as a conference room) empty. Furthermore, next months exhibitor had requested that she exhibit in December, not November, due to family problems. As I was due to exhibit in December again, would I be interested in swapping months, and could I possibly hang the exhibit early, ie now? Like most professionals in any business, I try to stay as organised as possible. In fact, I was about to start printing for my next exhibition (more details to follow) But six weeks early is a little TOO premature for me to be happy I'm putting forward work at the quality I like to present. So, I suggested a compromise. I offered to hang ten prints from the seasons exhibition (which were sitting in a box ready to go) and hang my next exhibit at the start of November, one month early. This effectively got FY Creative out of a hole, solved the other artist's problems, and won some brownie points for me into the bargain. They were more than happy with this, and yesterday I went along and put the prints on the wall. Even with less than half what I normally hang, it looks good. I'm happy and so is the client, which is what it's all about. Entry is free, so if you're in the area, nip along and take a look! The address is; 154-158 Church Street, Blackpool. Lancs. FY1 3PS. Now all I have to do is print the next one............

British Wildlife Photographer Awards 2010

I'm incredibly proud of my wife. Although she didn't win an award, she's been published in the British Wildlife Photography Awards 2010 book. It looks like she just missed out on the prizes but given the standard of the winners, she can be rightfully proud to be included. In my opinion (and hers!) the shot is not one of her best, but as always, the judges decision is final! This is the first publication for this competition, and lets hope there will be many more. It's also proof that you don't have to travel into the wilds to get award winning results. I hope you'll all join with me and wish her a hearty congratulations on her achievement.

Snail Journey

by Kitty Clark

Iberian Wolves

Wolves are one of the worlds most charismatic and misunderstood species. Everyone has an opinion on them, but remarkably few people know any of the facts about them. The Iberian subspecies, found only in Spain, is extremely endangered, but was virtually unknown until the controversy surrounding the winner of last year's Wildlife photographer of the year award. Unlike that particular image, I make no bones about declaring these to be captive animal shots. Normally, I wouldn't consider this, but I have very little chance of seeing these wolves in the wild. Unfortunately this has coincided with some terrible personal news. Yesterday, my wife and I were informed that an old college friend had died during the previous week. On contacting his family, we discovered this to be true. He was a gifted artist and photographer and should have been with us for many years to come. As there is some controvercy surrounding his death, for the sake of his family, I am not prepared to name him here at this time. But he will be sadly missed.

Still alive!

Phew what a year so far! We've been to Africa & Spain, we're moving house, and the latest news is that Kitty is being published in the British Wildlife Photographer awards! I'm incredibly proud of her, (if not a little jealous!) and I'm sure everyone will join me in congratulating her accordingly. We move to our new home and office in a couple of days, at which time business will return to normal (which will be a first!) and I'll be updating galleries etc at that time. It was to celebrate the 50th birthday of one of them, and somewhere down the lines it was pointed out that in all of their performances, noone had taken any photographs. At this point, everyone looked at me. And so I got volunteered.
I am NOT a social photographer. I don't do weddings etc. I stick to things that either run away or bite me when they don't like me, and I'm happy that way. I have the greatest respect for a lot of my colleagues who do work in this field, because I have tried and I know how challenging it is. My colleague from photoshelter Steve Lents, for example (http://stevelents.com/) consistently comes up with the goods, allowing him to run a successful business from Oregon.
However, on the night, having conned a friend to work as 2nd camera, I found I quite enjoyed myself. The results are good, I'm happy, so are the band, and I probably taught myself quite a bit into the bargain. Its such a different discipline to what I normally do. Cross training for photographers?

Can hares blow raspberries?!?

Ok, this is an odd one. Followers of my blog will be aware that I am currently working a personal project on brown hares. Last night, while sneaking down a country lane to try and get within shooting distance of some I'd spotted in a field, I surprised one sitting next to the hedge. I put the tripod up, but the movement startled it and it ran off a few paces (realtree camouflage means that it could hear me, but not accurately see me) Then, it sat up, STUCK IT"S TONGUE OUT, and ran away. I'd grabbed a couple of shots, but as they were taken through a hedge and a wire fence, they're not exactly up to my usual standard. When I zoomed in to take a look at the animal, I got the shock of my life. From a series of four shots, the tongue is only visible in one frame - the last. Was it done on purpose? I don't know. Maybe hares have a sense of humour. Normally these shots would never see the light of day, but I include this one here for pure novelty value. And remember, England, especially Lancashire, is full of tales of witches transforming themselves into hares to travel about the countryside. Sometimes you just have to wonder!

Just a quick note to say how wonderful Focus on Imaging was this year. The past few mornings have been absolutely stunning here, with blue skies, golden light and just enough mist to keep it interesting. Which of course means its time to get out the camera, blow off the dust and get to work. In keeping with the spirit of things, I'm currently undertaking a project on brown hare. As in mad as a March. Given their ability to vanish when least expected, this should keep me busy for quite some time! My first little foray the other night found me parading around in the hedgerows in whats affectionately known as my tree suit, getting strange looks from drivers, but it DID allow me to come up with some truly nice shots. Snow delays the 1st attempt, but 2 days later, and its all on the wall. Thanks to Michelle and Lou, who kindly gave up time from their holiday, everything went up without so much as a hitch. The exhibition runs for the whole of December, and entry is free. If you can make it, pop along! If not, check out the web gallery at www.wolfsheadphotographic.co.uk, where the images are all available for sale. There is an open night on the 21st, when Kitty and I will both be there, to answer questions/suffer abuse etc, and it would be great to see you all. I've shot some wonderful images this year, and hope to continue in 2010. The start of the year will no doubt all be taken up with my first exhibition, so thats something to look forward to and to panic about! For those not in the know, this is an internationally important grey seal breeding ground, and as such, well worth a visit to any wildlife photographer. The first of the images are now on the website, but I still have 500 or so to edit, so more to come! The weather is always iffy, but we hit it lucky, arriving after major rain/hail storms on both days. Watching the sun come up, as we trudged out to the sandbar, we passed several semi drowned photographers heading for home. I hate to think how their cameras had fared........

Recent Images.

Well, with this properly underway, I've started putting some recent images into galleries again. I've changed my shooting style a little, to try and produce something 'new'. I guess that the conversation with Vincent Munier at this years Wild Photo rubbed off more than I thought. Still no deer from my stalking trip, though, as I'm still editing them. Watch this space! The two newest galleries are Red Kites in Flight and some Wildfowl images. And today, while trying frantically to sort out my internet selling ability, it suddenly occurred to me that this is a fantastic self promotional tool. So I'm going to use it as such. I've reconfigured the page structure to blend with my business site, and I intend to use it as and how its required to keep the world posted on my doings and whereabouts.
